IE reborn: Internet Explorer 10 arrives on Windows 7

Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7 is able to run modern Web apps, just like IE 10 on Windows 8.

Internet Explorer 10 debuted on Windows 8, and until now was only available to people who bought into Microsoft's big Windows redo. That changes today, as Redmond rolls out IE 10 for Windows 7 (download).

The update brings enormous changes to the browser, and mostly for the better. Internet Explorer 10 is not only faster and more stable than the current IE for Windows 7, version 9, it's also far more standards-compliant.

"Gone are the days when developers aspire to build for the lowest common denominator. The way the Web becomes like an application is when you take advantage of the latest hardware. We've stopped the era of trying to maximize for aggregate browser share," Ryan Gavin, general manager for Internet Explorer at Microsoft, said in a phone conversation with CNET last week.

Basically, what Gavin is saying is that hardware advances have made much of the modern Web possible, but he also acknowledged the role of Web developers. "One of the things that we hear from developers is that the depth and support across IE 10 means less time testing and more time developing," he said.

So, Windows 7 gets the new IE10 Chakra and JavaScript engines; the Touch API innovations that help drive the browser on Windows 8; the security measures built into IE10 -- at least, the ones that are not dependent on Windows 8; location bar autocomplete; and an on-by-default Do Not Track header.

The standards that IE 10 adheres to are nothing to sneeze at. Microsoft claims that its labs have found the new version of the browser to be 20 percent faster on Windows 7 than IE 9, and it supports a veritable alphabet soup of HTML5 and CSS3 improvements -- 60 percent more standards-compliant than IE 9, says Microsoft. These include CSS Text Shadow; CSS 3D Transforms; CSS3 Transitions and Animations; CSS3 Gradient; SVG Filter Effects; HTML5 Forms; input controls; validation; Web sockets; HTML5 Sandboxing; Web workers; HTML5 App Cache; File Reader API; and HTML5 Drag-drop, among other backend improvements.

In short, modern HTML5 sites that run smoothly in IE 10 on Windows 8, or the latest browsers from Chrome and Firefox, will now work properly in IE 10 on Windows 7.

There were few interface changes from IE 9 to IE 10 on Windows 8 desktop, which is the version that Windows 7 users will see.

(Credit: Microsoft)

IE 10 for Windows 7 also comes with support for Pointer Events, which may seem strange to some. Pointer Events allow developers to write Web sites and register elements on the Web page to be responsive to multiple simultaneous interactions -- to respond to touch. Even though there are very few Windows 7 computers that shipped with touch screens, Gavin said that this was an important improvement to ship in the Windows 7 version of IE 10. "It's more about getting the developer to not having to do anything special to support the mouse on Windows 7 devices," he said.

Gavin and Rob Maurceri, Internet Explorer's group program manager who was also on the phone, both agreed that touch interaction would drive browser innovation for some time. "Four or five months ago, nobody was talking about touching the web," said Maurceri. "But now you've got new devices like the Pixel where others are following our lead."

Gavin was optimistic about the workplace adoption of IE 10 on Windows 7. "We're in a really good spot with enterprises, where we've been able to offer the latest version of our browser in a relatively short time frame," he said.

However, that's unlikely to be as cut-and-dried as Microsoft would like, even with Microsoft's best-in-class enterprise management tools. Browser adoption momentum indicates that businesses will continue gravitating away from IE, since IE 10 is only available on Windows 7 and Windows 8. The highest version of Internet Explorer that will work on Windows Vista is IE 9, while Windows XP users won't be able to graduate past IE 8.

One thing businesses won't have to worry about is whether Internet Explorer will adopt the six-week, rapid-release cycle of Chrome and Firefox. "We put less emphasis on release schedule and more emphasis on innovation. [Our] release schedule is a by-product of when that innovation is ready to go to market," said Mauceri.

There's little doubt that Internet Explorer 10 is the first version of IE in some time to ship with a fighting chance of being compared favorably to its competition. Being on Windows 7 is a massive boon to IE 10, but its inability to work on older operating systems that its competitors can comfortably perform on will hamstring it until those systems have significantly lower market share.

HTC settles with FTC over software security vulnerabilities

HTC settles with FTC over software security vulnerabilities

Mobile handset maker HTC has agreed to settle a complaint filed against it by the Federal Trade Commission accusing the company of failing to take "reasonable steps" to patch a security flaw in software running on its smartphones.

As part of this settlement, HTC has agreed to patch handsets that were left vulnerable to the security risks. And the company has agreed to develop a security program to address future security issues on its handsets.

HTC has already begun rolling out the patches to devices in the U.S., according to the FTC.

In its complaint, the commission accused HTC of failing to provide its engineering staff with adequate security training. The agency also claimed that HTC had not used "well-known and commonly accepted secure coding practices."

Specifically, the agency pointed to two logging applications offered by third-party companies used in the HTC devices. These applications -- Carrier IQ and HTC Loggers -- are also used by other handset and tablet makers. And they are used to track users' locations in order to improve the accuracy of location-based services.

Vulnerabilities in these software applications as well as others opened up millions of HTC customers to security risks, such as allowing malicious applications to send text messages, record audio, or even install additional malware on devices, the FTC said.

HTC has said in the past that none of its customers have been affected by these logging issues. And the company issued a patch to its devices starting in 2011. The company has not admitted or denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement and issued this statement:

Privacy and security are important, and we are committed to improving practices that help safeguard our customers' devices and data. Working with our carrier partners, we have addressed the identified security vulnerabilities on the majority of devices in the U.S. released after December 2010. We're working to roll out the remaining software updates now and recommend customers download them once available.

HTC's devices running Android 4.0 already include a fix to these security issues.

Sony shows socially focused PlayStation 4 capabilities, new controller at NY ...

But Sony didn’t reveal the device itself. Presenters played games that were projected on screens in a converted opera house, but the PlayStations themselves were hidden backstage throughout Wednesday evening’s two-hour event.

“I don’t know that the box is going to be something that’s going to have a dramatic impact on people’s feelings about the game. It will be a color and a size fairly comparable to previous consoles,” said Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, the U.S.-based arm of the PlayStation business.

“There’s a big story to tell here, and it’s going to take between now and the holiday season to get all the details out there,” Tretton said in an interview.

Tretton said the price of the PS4 hasn’t been decided yet, but hinted that it wouldn’t be as high as the PlayStation 3 was initi ally. The PS3 debuted in 2006 with two models for $500 and $600. It now sells for about $300.

The PS4 will be jostling for attention this holiday season with Microsoft’s successor to the Xbox. Details on that device are expected in June. Xbox 360 came out a year before PS3 and has been more popular, largely because of its robust online service, Xbox Live, which allows people to play games with others online. Having an event this early allows Sony to grab the spotlight for a few months, though the lack of an actual device was noted by many people on Twitter and elsewhere.

Sony did reveal that the insides of the PS4 will essentially be a “supercharged PC,” much like an Xbox. That’s a big departure from the old and idiosyncratic PlayStation design and should make it easier for developers to create games. Sony Corp. is using processing chips made by Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

“One of the big challenges we faced in the past was that we created great technology that we handed over to the development community, and they had to go through a learning curve before they could harness it. And when they did, we saw some phenomenal games,” Tretton said. “We wanted to lower that barrier of entry and really give them the ability to create tremendous gaming experiences from Day One.”

The adoption of PC chips also means that the new console won’t be able to play games created for any of the three previous PlayStations, even though the PS4 will have a Blu-ray disc drive, just like the PS3. Instead, Sony said gamers will have to stream older games to the PS4 through the Internet.

Other new features revolve around social networking and remote access. With one button, you can broadcast video of your game play so friends can “look over your shoulder virtually,” said David Perry, co-founder of the Sony-owned Internet game company Gaikai. With remote play, you can run a game on the PS4 to stream over the Internet to Sony’s mobile gaming device, the PlayStation Vita, which debuted last year.

Pranksters briefly deface Burger King's Twitter account

SEATTLE -- The LulzSec pranskster hacktivists appear to be active this morning, claiming credit for hacking Burger King's Twitter account and making a mockery of it.

Someone swapped out the corporate image associated with @Burgerking / Twitter, and replaced it with McDonalds' golden arches. The Burger King account listed 85,048 followers. The hackers also changed the name of @BurgerKing to McDonalds at a little after noon Eastern Time.

Subsequent Tweets from the compromised account mentioned the hacker group LulzSec; also used the hashtag and made references that Burger King had been sold to McDonalds.

Several of the Tweets used obscenities or racial epithets, according to news reports from CBS and ABC. The account, which has been suspended, also tweeted, "if I catch you at a wendys, we're fightin!"

Burger King Worldwide and Twitter did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Earlier this month, Twitter reported 250,000 account passwords had been compromised by hackers.

HTC Flagship Smartphone Details, Images Leaked

HTC Flagship Smartphone Details, Images Leaked

Either HTC has the worst corporate security known to humankind, or it is intentionally showing off its brand-new smartphone on the sly before it officially introduces it to press next week.

HTC has invited press to attend an event in New York City on Feb. 19. The company is expected to reveal its main smartphone for the year. The device initially bore the name "M7" -- something that CEO Peter Chou recently chanted at an internal HTC meeting. It appears as though the M7 moniker was just a codename, and HTC will call the device the HTC One.

If that name sounds a bit familiar, you're not mistaken. Throughout 2012, HTC used "One" in most of its device names, such as the One X, One S, One V and others. Why the company is simplifying the name further to just "One" is anyone's guess.

Images of the device have been spilling across the Internet for weeks. Twitter leaker extraordinaire @evleaks has supplied the best shots. The device is a stark monoblock slab with a large screen that is believed to be 1080p HD, just like the Droid DNA (sold by Verizon Wireless). The size of the display is estimated to be 4.7 inches. The pictures clearly show a user-facing camera, two speaker grills (one above and one below the display), and several sensors (probably ambient light and proximity). Images of the back side of the device have not been spotted.

[ Is your smartphone battery done before the day is over? See 5 Tips: Stretch Smartphone, Tablet Battery Life. ]

While the HTC One shown off by @evleaks is white, UnwiredView was able to get an image of a black version of the phone. The HTC One X, HTC's flagship for 2012, was offered in white and black, so it is not all that surprising to see these two shades of the HTC One.

Other details are slim. Various reports suggest that the HTC One will have a quad-core 1.7-GHz processor and come in both 32-GB and 64-GB variants. The HTC One will run Google's Android platform, either version 4.1 or 4.2 Jelly Bean. More importantly, the HTC One will use a brand-new version of HTC's Sense user interface overlay. The new UI is expected to be toned down from earlier versions.

When and where will the HTC One show up? The device will likely hit the street on March 22, and will be available from most major carriers in the U.S. Pricing is expected to run $199 for the 32-GB model and $299 for the 64-GB model.

Whatever HTC reveals on Feb. 19, it will be an important device for the Taiwan-based smartphone maker. Its fortunes have tumbled over the course of the last 18 months, despite solid devices like last year's One X. The HTC One needs to be "the one phone" that brings HTC back from the edge.

Analyst: Microsoft losing $2.5B a year on Office for iOS delay

Microsoft could be leaving as much as $2.5 billion on the table by failing to get a version of Office for iPhones and iPads out the door, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Holt.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant already has some software available for the iPhone and iPad in the pipelineâ€"but as with Office, they have yet to make an appearance. It's now at the point where even Microsoft are "no longer bothering" to deny the rumors," according to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, but the company is far from being forthcoming about an expected release date or in what form a release may take.

According to Holt in a note to investors, he said that Microsoft could generate a greater return on Office, by as much as close to half of what Office earns today. $2.5 billion, in fact.

At the last earnings call, Microsoft's Windows division took first place in divisional rankings by revenue. The Windows division generated $5.88 billion, while the Business divisionâ€"which houses Office and other servicesâ€"generated a second-place $5.69 billion. Office is worth a great deal to Microsoft and brings in around 90 percent of the division's total revenue, just shy of one-fifth of the company's overall quarterly revenue.

Microsoft Office for the iPad: Should they? Could they? Will they?

Microsoft Office for the iPad: Should they? Could they? Will they?

For some time, it was even bigger than the Windows division.

Holt estimates that if it were to release Office for iOS for around $60, just shy of one-third of iPad users would snap up the software. Should the current iPad cumulative sales trend continue to 200 million by the end of 2014, Holt believes that Microsoft could generate around $2.5 billion in revenue on Office for iPad alone, after Apple collects its commission fees, of course.

Holt also adds that around 30-40 percent of Mac users install paid versions of Office 2008/2011 as Windows PC users do. The figure is a bit skewed, considering that some Windows machines come with a basic version of Office already installed.

"The math is compelling, and may drive Microsoft to move Office," he wrote.

It's a rough estimate, but it's more of a point to show that not only Microsoft generate vast sums more in its Office business than it does now, but also that Apple could end up capitalizing on Microsoft's expected runaway success with the mobile software.

But here's where it gets even more interesting. Microsoft may not pay that 30 percent fee to Apple, by circumventing the need to go through the iPhone and iPad's app store altogether.

One of the problems with bringing Microsoft software to iPhone and iPad is that Apple will receive a 30 percent cut of every sale. Many Microsoft apps are available for iPhone and iPad alreadyâ€"not limited to OneNote, SkyDrive and Lyncâ€"and are free to download, so the company avoids paying a 30 percent cut to Apple.

Microsoft Office for iOS, Android to have Office 365 subscription tie-in: Report

Foley notes that in whatever form an Office version for iPhone or iPad may take, Microsoft will likely battle the 30 percent cut that Apple will take from an app store purchase.

The way Microsoft could get around it is by offering it as a subscription service as it has done with some versions of Office 2013, or even develop a non-app store version in HTML5 so the company can serve it up without needing to rent space in Apple's store.

But bringing Office to the iPad could ultimately lead to the death throes of Microsoft's own strategy, notably with Surfaceâ€"which remains the only tablet on the market with a 'legitimate' (used carefully, granted) version of Office installed.

Office for iPhone or iPad may seem frivolous to some, but it's an important bridge for bring-your-own-device (BYOD) users as well as ordinary enterprise users alike.

The majority of businesses still rely on Microsoft Officeâ€"in whatever incarnation, including partially Web-based Office 365â€"and iPad remains popular in the enterprise thanks to its back-end mobile device policy management.

Apple CEO Cook Weighs Greenlight Push for Preferred Stock

Apple CEO Cook Weighs Greenlight Push for Preferred Stock

Apple Inc (AAPL). Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said the iPhone maker will “thoroughly consider” a push by Greenlight Capital Inc.’s David Einhorn to use some of its $137.1 billion in cash and securities for preferred stock.

Eighteen months after succeeding Steve Jobs as CEO, Cook is facing pressure from shareholders who have seen the stock slump more than 30 percent since a September high amid slowing sales growth and tightening competition from rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co. Greenlight is suing Apple to block a proposal to eliminate the board’s ability to issue preferred stock without seeking shareholder approval, a legal effort Cook described as a “silly sideshow.”

“We welcome all ideas from all of our shareholders, including Greenlight, and we’re going to seriously consider it,” Cook said today at an investor conference in San Francisco hosted by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. “The management team and the board are in very active discussions.”

Einhorn is recommending that Apple issue $50 billion of preferred stock, to be traded alongside common shares and funded by operating cash flow. It would have a 4 percent annual cash dividend, paid quarterly, he said in a letter to shareholders. Preferred stock can have a higher yield and be issued without diluting the value of common shares.

Slowing Growth

Whatever the outcome of Greenlight’s suit, Apple won’t issue preferred stock without shareholder approval, Cook said.

“We would clearly go for a vote, whether our charter requires it or not,” Cook said.

Greenlight’s effort comes as growth is slowing for the iPhone (AAPL), Apple’s biggest source of revenue and profit, as the smartphone market becomes increasingly saturated. At the same time, new products such as the iPad mini -- priced to challenge tablets from Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. -- are eroding profit margins.

“I was encouraged to hear that Cook thought the Einhorn proposal was creative, even if that’s not what they ultimately do,” said Josh Spencer, a fund manager at T. Rowe Price Group Inc., which held 2.5 percent of Apple shares as of Sept. 30. “I think they’re going to return a large amount of cash to shareholders.”

Apple (AAPL), based in Cupertino, California, fell 2 percent to $470.34 at 12:15 p.m. in New York.

Acquisition Strategy

Cook also discussed Apple’s acquisition strategy. Apple will continue to buy about one company every two months, Cook said. While Cook has looked at some companies for large deals (AAPL), none have passed muster, he said.

“Cash isn’t burning a hole in our pocket,” Cook said. “We’re disciplined and thoughtful and we don’t feel a pressure to go out and acquire revenue. We want to make great products. If a large company could help us do that even better, we’d consider it.”

Asked whether Apple might make a less-expensive iPhone to appeal to budget-conscious customers and users in developing countries, Cook pointed to price cuts for older models of the iPhone and iPod. The iPhone 4 is available for free with a wireless contract in the U.S., compared with a $199 starting price for the iPhone 5.

IPhone Surprise

The popularity of the iPhone 4 following a price reduction last year caught Apple off guard, Cook said.

“We didn’t have enough supply of the iPhone 4,” he said. “So it surprised us, as to the level of demand we had for it.”

Apple will enlarge 20 of its stores this year, and add 30 more retail outlets, including its first in Turkey, Cook said. On average, each store is generating about $50 million in annual sales.

To bolster gross margins (AAPL), the company could sell more software and services, Cook said.

“We’re not a hardware company,” Cook said. “We have other ways to make money and reward shareholders.

One option could be a payments service linked to the more than 500 million credit cards associated with users’ iTunes accounts, Katy Huberty, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, wrote in a research report.

Cook said he’s ‘‘never been more bullish” on the innovative products in Apple’s pipeline.

“We are managing Apple for the long term,” Cook said. “I know people worry about quarters. We care, but the product decisions we make are for Apple’s long-term health, not for the short 90-day clock.”

BlackBerry shares drop as Home Depot switches to iPhone

BlackBerry shares drop as Home Depot switches to iPhone

TORONTO | Mon Feb 11, 2013 2:32pm EST

TORONTO (Reuters) - Shares of BlackBerry fell 3 percent on Monday after U.S. home improvement retailer Home Depot Inc said it is replacing the BlackBerry smartphones it provides its executives and managers with Apple Inc's iPhone.

The news is a setback for BlackBerry as it fights to retain its base of big corporate clients and government agencies. The recent launch of a revamped line of smartphones powered by its reengineered BlackBerry 10 operating system was a crucial step in that effort.

BlackBerry, which is changing its legal name from Research In Motion Ltd, unveiled two new devices - a full touch-screen smartphone dubbed the Z10 and a more traditional physical keyboard version named Q10 - at a launch event in New York on January 30.

The company hopes the make-or-break new line will help it win back market share ceded in recent years to the likes of Apple and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, whose Galaxy line is powered by Google Inc's market-leading Android operating system.

The news of Home Depot's defection sent BlackBerry shares 3.8 percent lower to $15.86 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq on Monday, overshadowing medi a reports that its Z10 device made a strong debut in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday. Since their unveiling, the devices have been well received in Britain and Canada. The all-important U.S. debut comes next month.

Stephen Holmes, a spokesman for Home Depot, confirmed an earlier report on the Apple Insider blog site that the retailer was issuing iPhones to almost 10,000 executives, managers and corporate staffers who currently use the BlackBerry.

He declined to say when the company had begun this process, and whether the decision was made before or after the launch of the new BlackBerry 10.

"We are replacing the current base of BlackBerry technology with iPhone, but these are not the mobile devices used in our stores," Holmes said.

The Apple Insider report said the move would have no impact on the 60,000 rugged Motorola smartphones used by Home Depot's store employees. Those devices provide mobile point-of-sale, analytical, walkie-talkie and traditional telephony services.

BlackBerry declined to comment directly on Home Depot's move, but in an email said it is seeing strong demand for its new Z10.

"We have over 2,700 unique businesses in North America already registered for our BlackBerry 10 Ready Program," Amy McDowell, a spokeswoman for the company, said. "We are confident that BlackBerry is, and will continue to be, the best solution for corporations managing large smartphone deployments."

BlackBerry's Toronto-listed shares were down 3.2 percent at C$15.98 at 1:30 p.m. ET (1830 GMT).

Maybe an iWatch will go with your iPhone

Corning

Corning's bendable Willow Glass.

Reports Sunday say Apple's working on a smart watch-like device that would run Apple's mobile operating system, iOS.

The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal each shared information from people who spoke on condition of anonymity. The Journal cited "people briefed on the effort" who said Apple has "discussed such a device with its major manufacturing partner Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. ... as part of explorations of potentially large product categories beyond the smartphone and tablet."

Apple, which did not comment to either publication, is notoriously secret about any of its ventures. (NBC News has contacted Apple, and will update this post if we hear back.)

The Times cited "people familiar with the company's explorations," who said the watch-like gadget would be made of curved glass. Corning's Willow Glass, the Times noted, could be what's used to make the watch.

Rosa Golijan / NBC News

The Pebble smart watch.

The company's tough Gorilla Glass is used on the iPhone, as well as on other smartphones. As Corning notes about Willow Glass: It will "help enable thin, light and cost-efficient applications including today’s slim displays and the smart surfaces of the future. The thinness, strength and flexibility of the glass has the potential to enable displays to be 'wrapped' around a device or structure."

Certainly, there's been no shortage of smart watches entering the market in recent months. These 2.0 versions, like the $150 Pebble, launched via Kickstarter, can show incoming calls, emails, calendar alerts, Facebook messages, weather alerts, tweets and more.

The COOKOO Connected Watch.

Another watch, introduced at the recent Consumer Electronics Show, is the $129 COOKOO Connected Watch, which uses either an iOS or Android app to let you know when you have incoming calls, appointme nts or new Facebook messages.

This new generation is a long way from what Microsoft first introduced more than a decade ago with its SPOT watch, which never quite took off and has been discontinued.

If the wrist is the new human real estate for tech, the field may be getting crowded, and Apple may not be the only major player to get involved. Google recently was granted a patent for a watch with a transparent screen, hidden in a flip-up bezel.

Links 10 Feb: Microsoft's Surface Pro Sells Out: But How Many Did They Release?

It’s not that difficult to get a product to sell out in the stores if you only send a few to the stores in the first place. There are some mutterings that this is what has happened as reports are coming in that Microsoft‘s Surface Pro has pretty much sold out where it was available.

If you were wondering how well the public would take to a Microsoft-made tablet costing $899 or more… quite well, at least from initial impressions. The 128GB Surface Pro has sold out at Microsoft’s US online store, and checks suggest a lack of stock at both the company’s retail stores as well as Best Buy and Staples.

OK, that’s good news of a sort.

Microsoft has announced “amazing” customer response to its tablet/notebook hybrid Surface Pro, and reports have noted that the higher end 128GB model has sold out in some locations “immediately” after going on sale, just as the Zune HD did in 2009.

Note that the Zune selling out at launch didn’t exactly make the product a hugely successful one.

According to a recent report from Digitimes, Microsoft was only planning on having an initial shipment volume of one million Surface Pro units. This is obviously less than what Microsoft planning with the Surface RT, which had an initial shipment volume of four million units. Could this be a factor in why the Surface Pro is already being sold out?

A million units: that would be good sales if there really had been one million available retail at launch. But that might not be quite the right number:

But once they got there, many said they discovered their stores had very few of the Surface Pro 128 GB models and in some cases, equally few of the 64 GB ones.

I received e-mails from a few readers who made treks to their local stores on Saturday morning only to discover stores received a handful, or in some cases, just one 128 GB Surface Pro. Some stores still have 64 GB Surface Pros on hand as of February 10. Users can’t order these devices online via the Microsoft Store, Best Buy or Staples sites because they are “sold out.”

If you advertise something for months, build a big expectation, then release only a few into the retail channel then yes, you can engineer a “sold out” situation. Which is what one commenter on Microsoft’s official blog seems to think has happened:

Like many others I tried to order online and in the stores. At Midnight the website was still not showing for sale, I tried for 30 minutes then all of a sudden sold out online. Before they even opened for business all Best Buy show unavailable. My 3 local Staples received 2 64gb versions each.

Just two.

There are 1050 Best Buy stores in the US, there are 1575 Staples stores, Staples seems to have received an average of 2-4 unit and best buy 6-8

If you do the math the max number of retail units you had available at launch was: 15000

Whether those are the real numbers, or whether as a projection they get anywhere near reality, isn’t quite the point. Which is that yes, we’ve reports of the Surface Pro “selling out”. But what we’d really like to know is how many were shipped in the first place?

Even a million units as a first manufacturing run isn’t exactly all that large now, is it?

Sony's Hirai Selling Properties Instead of TVs as Revival Stalls

Sony's Hirai Selling Properties Instead of TVs as Revival Stalls

Sony Corp. President Kazuo Hirai is relying on selling real estate to make the company’s first profit in five years as he struggles to find products able to compete with Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. devices.

Japan’s largest consumer-electronics maker posted an eighth straight quarterly loss and again cut sales targets for TVs, gaming devices and compact cameras. It reiterated a forecast for full-year net income of 20 billion yen ($213 million), including gains from the $1.1 billion sale of a New York building.

“Having assets to sell is saving Sony,” said Mitsuo Shimizu, a Tokyo-based analyst at Iwai Cosmo Holdings Inc. “It isn’t really clear yet what can start driving growth.”

Hirai made progress toward turning around an unprofitable TV business even as Sony posted a quarterly net loss of 10.8 billion yen on sluggish sales of liquid-crystal display sets, digital cameras and personal computers. His revival plan featuring 10,000 job cuts hasn’t delivered the same results as that of Panasonic Corp. President Kazuhiro Tsuga, whose company posted surprise net income of 61 billion yen.

“Sony’s earnings are really disappointing,” said Ichiro Takamatsu, a fund manager at Bayview Asset Management Co., which oversees about 150 billion yen. “It hasn’t restructured its business thoroughly enough.”

Targets Cut

Sony fell as much as 2.2 percent to 11.25 euros in German trading.

The company cut its sales forecast for portable game players in the year ending March to 7 million units from the 10 million predicted three months ago and the 16 million forecasted in May. The TV sales outlook was pared to 13.5 million units from 17.5 million predicted in May.

The electronics business faces a “tough environment,” Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato said at a briefing. The company expects an 80 billion-yen loss at its TV-making operations this fiscal year. The imaging and gaming divisions will have “significant” drops in operating profits, it said.

The TV maker reported a nine-month net loss of 50.9 billion yen, meaning it needs a profit of about 70 billion yen in the fourth quarter to hit its full-year goal. It expects operating- income gains of about $685 million (64 billion yen) from selling the New York building, with the sale to Chetrit Group due to close next month.

Asset Sales

The company is also looking at other possible asset sales, some of which are included in the full-year forecast, Shiro Kambe, a spokesman, said today. It has previously sold land, buildings, businesses and securities holdings, Kato said.

Sony may fetch 100 billion yen by selling its 25-story office building in Tokyo, Reuters reported Jan. 10, citing people with direct knowledge of the plan.

Sony sold a chemical-products making unit and stakes in two display-making ventures after racking up 692 billion yen in losses selling TVs.

Sony posted a third-quarter operating profit of 46.4 billion yen, compared with an operating loss of 91.7 billion yen a year earlier, and boosted sales to 1.95 trillion yen from 1.82 trillion yen. The company was expected to post net income of 21 billion yen, based on the average of three analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Its restructuring charges more than tripled to 16.7 billion yen.

Weaker Yen

“Sony is supposed to sell strong products that aren’t reliant on currency swings,” said Yuuki Sakurai, president of Fukoku Capital Management Inc. “We need to see those products before we’ll invest in Sony again.”

Panasonic is in “transition” toward profitability, Chief Financial Officer Hideaki Kawai said Feb. 1 after the company eliminated more than 38,000 jobs in the past year. Domestic rival Sharp Corp. also reported made its first operating profit in five quarters.

The yen has plunged since the end of September, helped by new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s call for “bold monetary policy” to beat deflation and weaken the currency. Currency depreciation will boost Sony’s second-half sales by 130 billion yen and operating profit by 17 billion yen, Kato said.

“It’s not that we are counting on a weaker yen trend, but if the trend continues, there will be a significant upside for our earnings in the coming fiscal year,” he said.

Bond Sale

Speculation that the weaker yen will boost earnings has helped Sony’s shares almost double in Tokyo trading within two months. They rose 2.6 percent to 1,519 yen before today’s announcement.

Hirai, who took over in April, is trying to revive the electronics business by focusing on mobile devices, games and digital imaging. He is cutting jobs and has pledged to make the TV unit, the world’s third-biggest, profitable in the year starting April 1.

The company also raised 150 billion yen selling five-year convertible bonds in November, its first offering of such securities since 2003.

The mobile-products division, which makes Xperia smartphones and tablet computers, posted an operating loss of 21.3 billion yen, narrower than the loss of 48.4 billion yen a year earlier. The loss at the home-entertainment unit, which includes TVs, narrowed to 8 billion yen from 89.8 billion yen.

Apple, Samsung

Sony is adding new products in a bid to lure consumers from Apple iPads and Samsung Galaxy devices. At last month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, it introduced new higher- definition TVs, water-resistant smartphones and a more-powerful digital camera. The company also revealed plans to offer Ultra- High Definition content from Sony Pictures for downloading on its TVs.

A PlayStation event has been announced for Feb. 20, stoking speculation the company will unveil a fourth-generation gaming console. Sony also has invested in medical-device maker Olympus Corp. and gaming platform company Gaikai Inc., and in facilities to make image sensors.

Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung -- the world’s biggest maker of smartphones, TVs and computer-memory chips -- last month warned that profit this year would be hit by a strengthening won. It also said global demand for smartphones was slowing.

Apple’s profit grew at the slowest pace since 2003 in the quarter ended December as the lack of a low-cost iPhone dented growth in emerging markets.

Hackers hit US Department of Energy

Hackers hit US Department of Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy said that hackers have stolen personal data of its employees and contractors.

The U.S. Department of Energy has confirmed that its computer systems were hacked into last month. According to The New York Times, the federal agency sent around an internal e-mail on Friday telling its employees about the cyberattack.

"The Department of Energy has just confirmed a recent cyber incident that occurred in mid-January which targeted the Headquarters' network and resulted in the unauthorized disclosure of employee and contractor Personally Identifiable Information," the e-mail said.

The agency said that it is working to figure out the "nature and scope of the incident" but that so far it believes "no classified data was compromised." It's unclear which divisions within the Department of Energy were attacked or who was behind the hack.

The Department of Energy is in charge of much of the country's vital infrastructure, such a s energy production, nuclear reactor production, and radioactive waste disposal. It has troves of classified and sensitive data that if leaked could be detrimental to the country's security. According to Reuters, the most highly classified information is stored on networks that aren't connected to the Internet.

The head of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano recently announced that she believes a wave of cyberattacks on U.S. infrastructure is a serious possibility. Dubbing such an event a "cyber 9/11," Napolitano warned that cyberterrorists could take down the nation's power grid, water infrastructure, transportation networks, and financial networks.

While it doesn't seem like the January cyberattack on the Department of Energy compromised any data or infrastructure, it does show that hackers were able to breach the government's computer systems. In the e-mail, the agency said it is working to fortify itself against future attacks.

"Once the full nature and extent of this incident is known, the Department will implement a full remediation plan," the e-mail said. "The Department is also leading an aggressive effort to reduce the likelihood of these events occurring again. These efforts include leveraging the combined expertise and capabilities of the Department's Joint Cybersecurity Coordination Center to address this incident, increasing monitoring across all of the Department's networks and deploying specialized defense tools to protect sensitive assets."

CNET contacted the Department of Energy for comment. We'll update the story when we get more information.

What was that BlackBerry commercial you just saw?

What was that BlackBerry commercial you just saw?

So did a clown just explode, or what?

Okay, so what now?

BlackBerry opted to go with the whimsical and fantastical with its Super Bowl commercial, showing what the new BlackBerry Z10 can't do instead of what it can do. To say it's a little strange would be an understatement.

Indeed, it's a bold choice, one that some would argue might be a little head-scratching. But it's one that BlackBerry Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben believes will turn some heads and get consumers primed for a launch that's still more than a month away.

"The Super Bowl is a big wake-up call saying BlackBerry is back," Boulben told CNET. "It says there's something worth checking out."

With the BlackBerry phones generally getting good reviews (read CNET's review here), much of the company's success will ride on how well it markets the phone, and how strongly the carriers support it in their stories and with their sales reps. There are many examples of companies that failed despite great products and services, and BlackBerry is looking to avoid their past mistakes.

Which is where the Super Bowl ad comes in. Boulben says the commercial is a one-off event to take advantage of the Super Bowl's massive reach. The commercial is basically everything Boulben has said he wouldn't do for the campaign.

The commercial offers an early glimpse at the Z10 before things get weird. After he starts using the phone, the new BlackBerry customer briefly erupts in flames, grows elephant legs, teleports himself with a colorful poof, and turns an out-of-control truck into thousands of rubber ducks. The tagline: "In 30 seconds, it's quicker to show you what it can't do."

The ad asks interested viewers to check out BlackBerry's Z10 Web site to find out more information about the features of the smartphone.

With so many splashy commercials filling the airwaves during the Super Bowl, BlackBerry wanted to do something different from the traditional ad showing off features such as the Z10's Hub or Peek. Boulben, however, said the testing on the commercial has been positive. He noted it would be a "one-off" spot unrelated to the rest of the campaign.

BlackBerry Z10: A new hope (pictures)

"We wanted to do something that breaks the conventions of the category," he said. "If you do a traditional commercial at the Super Bowl, it will fall flat."

While the Z10 has launched elsewhere around the world, and will debut in Canada next week, the U.S. will be among the last countries to get the phone, thanks in part to the more rigorous testing process that it undergoes here. So BlackBerry has to deal with keeping the interest level high until mid-March, which is roughly when the Z10 should arrive in carrier stories.

Boulben said that during the dead period, he will attempt to keep interest going through online campaigns, mobile ads, YouTube, and social networks. The company will seed devices to celebrities and other high-profile figure to build buzz for the products. The goal is to drive traffic to the BlackBerry Web site, and then on to the pre-registration pages run by the carriers.

BlackBerry won't start its full campaign, titled "Keep Moving," until the Z10 launches next month, Boulben said, noting that he wanted to maximize the impact of the ads by having the smartphone available to consumers. The campaign would be more traditional and highlight the practical advantage of the features found on BlackBerry 10, he said.

BlackBerry would launch its campaign alongside the carriers, he said. But he wouldn't specify just how enthusiastically the carriers would support the new smartphones. He added that it was a good sign that the carriers came out during launch day to commit to the company, which is rarity in the industry.

"Behind the scenes, our teams and their teams are working night and day together," he said.
